Mission Letter from President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen

New CESES President Doris Bandín Abad

We would like to congratulate Glenn Micallef and to recognise the importance of assigning a commissioner for intergenerational fairness, and are happy that intergenerational fairness is one of the EC’s key priorities.

In her recent mission letter to Glenn Micallef, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, brought up the subject of intergenerational fairness, putting particular emphasis on keeping the interests of present and future generations in mind. Although we regret the lack of focus on senior citizens in the mission paper, she did outline the importance of harnessing and communicating knowledge and experience between generations to foster a more inclusive and sustainable Europe.

Seniors play a crucial role in bridging generational gaps, transferring valuable skills and wisdom to younger generations. Expanding their involvement in mentoring, volunteering, and decision-making processes, with a focus on digital inclusion and lifelong learning, could further enhance their role in shaping Europe’s future, not only ensuring that they are not left behind in an increasingly digital and fast-changing world, but that their knowledge would be passed on to the younger generation. This would contribute to a truly inclusive vision of intergenerational fairness.
