2020: Staying Connected in Uncertain Times

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020, international cooperation faced unprecedented obstacles. Travel was halted, in-person meetings were cancelled, and many projects were delayed or reshaped entirely.

Like countless other organisations around the world, CESES had to reimagine how to collaborate. Member organisations shifted to online exchanges, explored digital mentoring formats, and found new ways to maintain communication across countries. While some activities inevitably slowed, the network’s sense of solidarity remained intact — proving that cooperation could adapt even under the most restrictive circumstances.

Though there were challenges, the experience strengthened CESES’ capacity to work remotely and laid the groundwork for hybrid approaches — from hybrid meetings to digital mentoring — that remain in use today. It was a reminder that the value of a network lies not only in the work it does, but in its ability to endure and evolve when conditions change.
